On the 31st of May we (the Erasmus students) met Dr Valentin Stoyanov , MD, PhD, Head of ENT Department at University Hospital Stara Zagora. and talked about a bunch of different things. However the one that caught my attention was the part where he talked about antibiotics and why we should not self-treat ourselves and what the dangers that come with it are. I found that
really interesting and also useful because a) it’s interesting the way it all works and b) because it’s good to know what the issues that come with the self- prescriptions of antibiotics are. What I learned was that self-medication with antibiotics is actually really dangerous because you can develop resistance which can be really scary as if you or a member of your family needs antibiotics at some point, they may not work. That’s why we should always consult our doctors before doing whatever when it comes to medicine. Doctors in general should keep track of the antibiotics they
give you, so that the medicine is actually effective.
All in all I think that the meeting was really useful because we learned a lot not only about diseases and how to prevent some of them, but also discussed the developments in medicine and how good medicine and healthcare in Bulgaria actually is. This is discussed by other team members.
